What is the importance of the pores on the skin?

Pore is essential for maintaining a healthy skin. They accommodate hair follicles, sebaceous glands and sweat glands while ensuring natural lubrication and temperature regulation of the skin. The size of the pores is basically determined by genetics and hormonal factors; however, they can appear larger due to excess production of oil from the skin, sun damage and aging.

What are the causes of large pores?

We have several factors that cause enlarged pores.

Excess oil production: Pore can appear larger when clogged with excess oil which leads to build up of sebum and dead skin cells. This stretches the skin making the skin pores more visible.

Your genes: This is the only uncontrollable factor in this list. I f your parents have large pores there is a high chance you may inherit this characteristic.

Aging: As we age our skin loses collagen and elastin naturally, hence reduced skin elasticity, this results to pores to enlarge and become more visible, but don’t worry daily use of sunscreen and robust anti-aging skin care routine can keep your skin vibrant and looking younger much longer.

Poor skin care routine: Inadequate cleansing, lack of exfoliation and failure to remove the makeup properly can lead to accumulation of dirt, oil, and dead skin cells. This builds up can make pores appear larger. Follow my morning and evening skin care routine guide to help you in this. gchuks.com

Sun damage: When you skin is exposed to the sun for a long time it leads to collagen and elastin fibres in the skin being damaged causing it to lose to lose elasticity, leading to the pores to lose their tightness and appear more visible so ensure you wear sunscreen whenever you are out in the sun.

Hormonal Changes: This is most challenging stage of a person’s life. Hormonal fluctuations e.g. those that happen in puberty, pregnancy, or menopause can increase oil production in the skin. This excess productivity of oil contributes to clogging of pores leading to enlarged pores.

Environmental factors: Exposure to pollutants dust, dirt can settle on the skin resulting to clogged pores hence making then appear larger.

1.Cleansing Your Skin Morning and Night:

Use a gentle cleanser to wash your face in the morning and evening. This helps to remove excess oil, dirt, and debris from your pores. Start with a gentle cleanser that removes dirt, impurities, and excess oil without peeling the skin. opt for ceramides and niacinamide to clean while protecting the skin barrier. Is recommended, if your skin is acne prone/oily, look for products containing salicylic acid or glycolic acid which help in unclogging the pores and exfoliating dead skin cells.

Foaming cleansers tend to have a drying characteristic especially those with acids in the formula.

Double cleansing is also recommendable at the end of the day to remove make up and sunscreen which is hard to remove in a single cleanse and can clog easily if not well removed.

Oil cleansers are also recommendable, they help the skin type with acne or blackheads by removing excess oil build up on the pore for a clearer complexion.

2.Exfoliation:

Exfoliate your skin as needed (usually 1-3 times a week) to remove dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores. Be gentle especially if you have a sensitive skin. Frequent exfoliation is important in maintaining clear pores by removing dead cells and debris that can clog and stretch pores.

Choose chemical exfoliants like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHA, s). These penetrates the skin removing dead cells hence revealing a smooth texture and minimizing the pores visibility.

If you see signs of dryness, redness or tightness, consider reducing the frequency at which you exfoliate or you can choose a more gentle exfoliant to use.

3.Toners and Essences for Large Pores:

Look for toners or essences containing ingredients like salicylic acid or witch hazel. These can help tighten pores and control oil production, also consider using alcohol-free toners that help in balancing the skins pH and can hydrate and minimise the pores. I recommend toners that include niacinamide as a main ingredient, niacinamide is well known for minimizing visibility of the pores and oil productivity thus strengthening the skin’s moisture barrier.

      4.Moisturize Always:

Even if you have oily skin, moisturizing is essential. Consider oil free non-comedogenic moisturizers and light weight moisturizers to keep your skin hydrated without clogging pore. Hydrated skin appears fresh which can limit the visibility of the pores. The gel moisturizers work well with oily skin, they are light weight.

        5.Sunscreen Protection:

damage can break down collagen and elastin, leading to larger pores. Apply sunscreen daily to protect your skin hydrated without clogging pores. Look for broad-spectrum of SPF 30 sunscreen. Apply sunscreen daily. The sun damage can contribute to pores enlargement and aging reducing skin elasticity and collagen production.

          6.Pore Minimizing Treatments and Serums:

Consider using products with ingredients like niacinamide, retinol, or alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), Vitamin C. These can help improve skin texture and minimize pore appearance, these treatments and serums have been magical on my skin, they have been part and parcel of my skin care routine, the results are amazing!

Use clay masks once a week to absorb excess oil and purify your skin. Look for masks containing kaolin or bentonite clay.

                9.Pore Minimizing Primers:

Before applying makeup, use a pore-minimizing primer. It creates a smooth base and blurs the appearance of pores it also sucks debris that can enlarge your pores. Use clay mask weekly to minimise the pore appearance. Silicone based primers create a smooth base for your makeup blurring the pores appearance. Apply it after moisturizer and allow it to settle before applying the foundation.

                  10.Foundation Selection:

Choose oil-free, non-comedogenic foundations. Matte or powder foundation can help the appearance of the pores. I recommend that you choose alight weight, oil free or mineral powder foundation, the mattifying properties reduce shine on the skin, this could stress the look of enlarged pores.

                    11.Red light Therapy

Red light therapy improves the look of fine lines, enlarged pores and sun damage by stimulating collagen and elastin production to firm and vibrant skin.
